An AI readiness assessment is a structured look at whether a team has the workflows, skills, data access, and psychological safety to adopt AI tools — done before rollout, so the rollout is designed around what the assessment finds. It is the first phase of the REZUME™ Framework and the single highest-leverage hour an HR leader can spend on AI.
Below are the twelve questions we ask in every Readiness course. Score each one 0 (no), 1 (partly), or 2 (yes). The scoring guide is at the end.
Workflow readiness
- Can you name the three HR workflows that consume the most manual hours each month? Onboarding paperwork, benefits questions, policy lookups, and reporting are the usual suspects. If you cannot name them, the tool has nowhere to go.
- Is each of those workflows documented as it actually runs, not as the policy says it should?
- Has anyone decided where in those workflows an AI step would sit, and what a good output looks like?
Tool readiness
- Do you know which AI tools your organization already licenses? Copilot, ChatGPT Enterprise, Gemini, or features inside your HRIS — most teams have more than they realize.
- Can every person who needs access get it today, without a ticket that takes two weeks?
- Are there approved templates, prompts, or guardrails for the sensitive work HR does — employee data, compensation, performance?
People readiness
- Has anyone asked the team how they feel about AI? Writer's 2026 survey found 29% of employees admit to resisting their company's AI strategy; you want to know if that is your team before you train them.
- Are there one or two natural champions — people already experimenting — who could be given a formal role?
- Has leadership said, plainly, that AI is here to supercharge people rather than replace them — and backed it up?
Measurement readiness
- Do you have a baseline for time-to-competency on new hires, hours per benefits cycle, or response time on employee questions?
- Is there a dashboard the HR team owns, or does every metric require a request to another department?
- Has the CFO or CHRO said what result would make this program a success? If nobody has named the number, nobody will hit it.
Scoring
18–24: You are ready for role-specific upskilling now; the constraint is time, not foundations. 10–17: Typical. Fix the workflow and access gaps first (questions 1–6), then train — this is what our Readiness and Zero-Gap courses do in weeks one and two. Under 10: Do not buy or roll out anything else yet. Spend two weeks on questions 1, 4, 7, and 12 and you will save a quarter of frustration.
Why assess before you train
Training a team that scores 8 on this list produces exactly what the industry data shows: attendance without adoption. The assessment is not a formality. It tells you which of the six REZUME™ phases your team actually needs, and in what order. The whole 4-week sprint is built from its results.
